My Bathroom Remodeling Project
During May of 2009 I took on one of the biggest construction projects of my life - remodeling my bathroom.  From
May 20, 2009 - July 03, 2009 I spent every one of my days off in the bathroom.  Long story short, I had no idea
what I was doing when I began this nightmare but on the plus side, I saved over $1000 dollars by not paying
someone else to do it.  This is what happened.
Ever since I could remember, mildew
has always been a problem in our
bathroom.  This is the same house I
grew up in, so for 40 years this is what
I have had to live with.
Having a window in your shower is just
begging for trouble.  Water would seep
down into the window seal and
saturate the studs below the window.
This created mold, mildew and not to
mention serious structural damage.
This end of the bathroom was in pretty
good shape but in order to make
repairs to the other end of the room, I
would have to destroy all of this as well.
May 20, 2009 - And so it begins.  I
started ripping out the plaster walls so
that I could see exactly what type of
moisture damage I was going to be
dealing with.
Clicking onto any of the photos will
display a larger more detailed picture.
All of this had to be disposed of.  After
tearing out a wall I would fill up buckets
and trashcans full of plaster and rotten
wood and haul them away to a local
dumpster.  This was very time
consuming since I only had small
containers to work with
I was really surprised to discover that
there was no more wood damage than
what is shown here.  I was expecting to
have to replace the entire outer wall.
May 22, 2009 - Started tearing the
ceiling out today.
Covered the ceiling with sheetrock and
put plywood on the back wall behind
the tub.
June 03, 2009 - Covered the wall
behind the tub with 1/4" birch plywood
so that I would have a smooth surface
to glue the tub surround to.
Began tearing out the wall behind the
toilet.
Glued the tub surround in place today
also.
Added new hardware to the 3 valve
faucet.
June 05, 2009 - Added sheetrock
over the tub surround today.
Installed a new shower head.
Installed new shower doors.
Cut out for the light switch.
June 16, 2009 - Installed a new vent
fan in the ceiling.
Finished closing in the ceiling with
sheetrock.
With the help of a friend, I wired up the
vent fan and light fixture.
June 17, 2009 - Put down new flooring
today.
June 18, 2009 - More sheetrock
added today.
June 19, 2009 - Closed in the final
wall today with plywood and made cut
outs for the light fixture, wall receptacle
& vanity plumbing.
June 20, 2009 - Finished adding the
sheetrock today to the entire bathroom.
June 25, 2009 - covered all the screw
heads and seams with wallboard
compound.  Began sanding in
preparation for paint.
July 03, 2009 - FINISHED!
